George Holz Master Class: The Hollywood Portrait 26/03/2015

HOLZ HOLLYWOOD is the true Hollywood story of photographer George Holz. It is a rich narrative of celebrity portraiture spanning over three decades.
Renate Gruber describes Holz’s images as having an “unexplainable élégance,” full of “allure” and “elite imagery” that conveys his “intense admiration of and respect for” his subjects, some of the world's best known film stars, athletes, and musicians. Holz's portraits are a virtual who's who of Hollywood, including Beyoncé, Claire Danes,  Dennis Hopper, Angelina Jolie, Michael Jordan, Madonna, Jack Nicholson, and countless others. In Holz Hollywood, through his photographs and stories, Grammy® Award winner George Holz presents an intimate glimpse into a glamorous world.
Join renowned photographer George Holz as he shares stories and techniques from 30 years of celebrity portraiture.
Holz has taught scores of professional and amateur photographers in universities and workshops around the world and respects and nurtures the individual style of each student. His students continue to thrive in commercial and fine art photography. "I've had a few extraordinary mentors, some very famous and some very academic, and I regard teaching as an opportunity to pass on their legacy. The still image is more relevant than ever  –– we must maintain the sensibilities of the past as we develop the post-digital era."
A graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, protégé of the legendary Helmut Newton, one of the famous Three Boys from Pasadena, and a leading photographer in Hollywood and New York, Holz's approach to teaching is alternately academic, technical, and personal. His core philosophy to "do it all in camera" though good lighting and composition creates believable and intimate portraits.

George Holz was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and assisted for Helmut Newton, whom he credits with guiding his career. As a fledgling photographer, he lived in Milan and Paris, where he shot beauty and fashion for major European magazines such as Italian Vogue and French Elle. Afterward, he moved to New York City, where he set up his famous studio on Lafayette Street, traveling frequently to Los Angeles and Europe to shoot fashion, advertising, and portraiture for major publications such as Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. His fine-art nudes have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
Holz works as an adjunct professor and lectures internationally at museums and universities. He is presently based in the rustic Catskill Mountains of New York, where he lives on a farm with his family, two dogs, and flock of East Friesian sheep.
